MIKE HILLS

GARDENING
FOR HONEYBEES

ABOUT THE CLASS:

I will review some good options for trees, shrubs, perennials and garden blooms to help urban honeybees with year round pollen and nectar sources. Resource lists will be provided. Mostly for Mid- and Low-Elevation urban beekeepers, but some of the information applies to any Arizona beekeepers.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

University of Arizona College of Agriculture graduate in agronomy. Worked in the turfgrass and farm seed industry for 40 years. Raised honeybees in 1970’s in Scottsdale, and now 2 hives again of urban honeybees in Phoenix and Scottsdale.

DR. CAHIT OZTURK

HONEYBEE
PESTS & DISEASES

ABOUT THE CLASS:
Honeybee health is really important for successful and productive beekeeping. Honeybee’s health has been declining for years. Over the last 10 years, winter losses have been unsustainably high ranging from 30% to 40% nationally. Beekeepers should be more and more careful to save their bees for themselves and for future generations. I will give a basic summary of common bee diseases and pests and their management.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Dr. Ozturk received his Bachelor’s degree in animal science in 1993 and completed his Masters and Ph.D. in apiculture at the University of Cukurova, Adana, Turkey. His journey working with bees started in 1989 as an undergraduate. He has since taught many courses on beekeeping, queen rearing, and honey bee products. He has also taught advanced beekeeping courses such as queen bee rearing, bee breeding and instrumental insemination as a lecturer for 7 years at the beekeeping departments of two different universities. He worked in a government research institute in Turkey as an apiculturist and researcher in the beekeeping department for 13 years where he further developed expertise in queen rearing, instrumental insemination, in vitro rearing and hygienic behavior. His work also included hygienic honey bee breeding projects. Dr. Ozturk joined ASU in 2014 where he works as the Research Technologist and manager of the honeybee research laboratory. As a master beekeeper with over 30 years of experience Dr. Ozturk shares his knowledge and expertise in his ASU beekeeping courses.

TOM CHESTER

INTRODUCTION
TO BEEKEEPING

ABOUT THE CLASS:

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

DR. STEVEN THOENES

SWARM TRAP
SOLUTIONS

ABOUT THE CLASS:

Swarm traps were invented in the mid 1980s. They were used to monitor the movement of Africanized bees thru central America and into the USA. The original design of swarm traps was effective but not beekeeper friendly. New designs are very useful for beekeepers to add bees to their apiaries

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Dr. Steven Thoenes is commonly considered one of the world’s leading experts on honey bees. Since starting BeeMaster in 1994, Dr. Thoenes has performed thousands of high-quality swarm & nest removals throughout Tucson and Southern Arizona. In addition to his ongoing bee removal services, Thoenes has taught courses all over the world, appeared as an expert on such shows as Good Morning America, and been the lead scientist on over 25 educational films for such companies as The BBC, National Geographic, and Nature.

INTRODUCTION
TO BEEKEEPING

ABOUT THE CLASS:

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

DUANE COMBS

USING TECHNOLOGY
TO MONITOR HIVES

ABOUT THE CLASS:

I’ll show you how to know what is going on in your hives, make your bees happier and more productive, while opening your hives up less often. Better management using technology will save you money, time, and bees.

.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

With my first hives I noticed ever time I inspected my hives it effected the bees. So I started looking at sensors and technology for ways to inspect my hives without opening the hives up.

SCOTT & ELISE WHYTE

NEW BEEKEEPER
Q&A

ABOUT THE CLASS:

Scott and Elise will talk briefly about how they got started with bee keeping, what equipment they purchased, how they’ve maintained and grown colonies (and lost a few queens!), and harvested honey.

They are open to any and all questions (like…How much does it cost? How much time does it take? How much honey do the bees produce? Have you been stung?…)

Please join us for an open and lively discussion.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Shane Lee

SHANE LEE

THE BIRDS
AND THE BEES

ABOUT THE CLASS:

Shane will be doing a short story time talking about a beekeepers interpretation of “swarming” by Rudolph Stiener.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

Shane (Bee Charmer) Lee has been keeping bees in Arizona and Now Hawaii for many years. His intimate knowledge and relationship with honeybees is inspiring. He may seem unorthodox, but he will open your mind to new ideas in beekeeping.

JON MOTT

RISK MANAGEMENT
FOR BEEKEEPERS

ABOUT THE CLASS:
